Act Two

FADE IN:

EXT. CHURCH-MORNING

Music cue - “Soul Survivor” by the Rolling Stones

The Impala pulls up outside the church. It's a majestic building in white with a few steps leading up to the main entrance. To the rear we can see a vast cemetery.

SAM
Nice place.

DEAN
Come on, Sam. It's just one many houses of the damn holy.
(beat)
You've seen one you've seen em' all.

Dean goes round to the trunk and opens the weapons compartment.

SAM
(confused)
What are you doing?

DEAN
I figure while we're here we can ask for a few blessings.
(picks up a handful of iron bullets)
Ever since Jim was killed we've been short on consecrated rounds, thought maybe the local padre might be able to accommodate us.

SAM
You're going to ask a small parish priest to bless your ammo?

DEAN
Er....yeah.

Sam shakes his head in disbelief.

MAN (O.S.)
Can I help you boys?

Dean and Sam turn around to see FATHER COLLINS standing by the church steps.

SAM
Er...yes. I'm Sam this is my brother Dean, we're just wondering if we could ask you a few questions about your church?

COLLINS
(suspicious)
Really? It's not often you get youngsters such as yourselves wanting to take an interest in ecumenical matters.

DEAN
(to Sam, confused)
Ecu...what?

SAM
If it's a problem, Father, we can go if you'd prefer-

COLLINS
(interrupting, dismissive)
No, not at all. Everybody is welcome here.
(beat)
This is a house of God, after all.
(beat)
Please, step inside.

Dean and Sam follow Collins inside the church.

INT. CHURCH

We ANGLE DOWN and track the three of them as they walk down the aisle towards the altar.

COLLINS
So tell me.
(turns to the brothers)
What would you like to know about our small, but humble, house of the Lord?

SAM
Well...actually, there's no real easy way to put this but...have you noticed anything strange happening around here in the last couple of weeks?

Collins is silent, he looks slightly nervous.

COLLINS
W-What do you mean, strange?

DEAN
We don't know, but judging from your expression I'm guessing you've seen something.
(beat)
Haven't you?

Collins sighs.

POV. COLLINS

Glances over to one of the windows, where we see the morning sunlight seeping in over the graveyard outside.

COLLINS
Yes, there have been...disturbances, lately.

SAM
What kind of disturbances?

COLLINS
Voices coming from the cemetery, people lurking by the graves.
(turns to face the boys, graven)
People whose eulogies I've performed at their funerals.

SAM
(curious)
You see dead people?

DEAN
(winces)
I can't believe you just said that.

COLLINS
Maybe. Maybe I'm just going crazy.
(beat)
I hope that's the case.

SAM
(confused)
Why would you say that?

COLLINS
(bows head)
Because if it's real then it means the great day of reckoning is coming.
(looks up at the statue of Christ on the cross above the altar)
Judgment Day!

DEAN
You really believe that?

COLLINS
(nods)
I'm a man of the cloth, it's my job to believe.

SAM
Father, we don't think you’re losing it, in fact we'd like to help stop whatever is happening here, before it's too late.

DEAN
Yeah.
(beat)
But first of all.
(pulls out a handful of bullets)
Could you bless these for me- please…

Dean smiles as Collins looks a little bemused.

EXT. CHURCH

We see the front end of a car pull up next to the Impala.

INT. CHURCH

Dean and Sam are sat in one of the front row pews watching Collins as he blesses the bullets one by one.

SAM
So what do you think, Zombies?

DEAN
Sounds likely.
(beat)
Let's just hope they've got a huge mall complex around here somewhere otherwise we're screwed.

SAM
We need to get a look at that cemetery

DEAN
(nods)
The sooner the better, I've got a feeling we're gonna' be up against the clock on this one.
(shakes his head, smiles)
Man, but...can you imagine it? A real Zombie case, full on “Night of the Living Dead” situation. That'd be crazy!

SAM
Dean! This isn't a movie, this is real!

DEAN
I know that…
(beat)
I'm just...saying, Zombies, it's a classic.

SAM
(beat)
Have you...ever thought about it?

DEAN
What? Raising the dead? Hell no, what's dead should damn well stay dead.
(beat)
Can't believe you'd even ask me that.

SAM
(looking at the ground)
I have...thought about it, I mean.

DEAN
Jess?

SAM
Yeah.

DEAN
(beat)
Then you're an idiot.

SAM
(slightly annoyed)
Excuse me?

DEAN
(scolding)
You heard me, Sammy. Raising the dead it's...real black magic stuff, no good ever comes of it, the person you end up bringing back is never the person you loved it's something evil that just looks like them.

SAM
(nods)
I know.

DEAN
(understanding)
But I know how you feel, even if you don't believe me.

SAM
(smiles)
Thanks, man.

Dean just smiles and turns back to the alter. Father Collins walks over to them.

COLLINS
There we go. 13 blessed iron rounds.

DEAN
Thanks, Padre.

COLLINS
(smiles)
Please don't call me Padre.

DEAN
Absolutely.

SAM
Yeah, thanks again, Father. I know it was an unusual request and-

COLLINS
(shakes head, laughing)
Not a problem, makes a change from baptizing babies

The three of laugh then-

MAN (O.S.)
Little early for church, don't you think?

They turn around to see Sheriff Mercer and two of his deputies walking down the aisle towards them.

COLLINS
(coldly)
Jared! What a pleasant surprise.
(beat)
Haven't seen you here for a while.

MERCER
Well I ain't got time to waste prayin' when there's work to be done, Malcolm.
(turns to Dean and Sam)
And I'm afraid I'm going to have take your two friends here in for questioning.

Mercer's two deputies move in to cuff Dean and Sam.

DEAN
(struggling)
What! Hey!

SAM
What's going on?

COLLINS
(demanding)
Jared, just what in God's name do you think your doing?

MERCER
My job.
(beat)
I want to ask these two some questions about the murder of Doctor Barlow.

DEAN
(Shocked)
What?!

SAM
(stunned)
She's dead!? How?

MERCER
I don't really care for the “how?”, son, as far as I'm concerned the bigger question is “why?”

DEAN
(angry)
Dammit, we didn't kill her!

MERCER
(smiles)
We'll see-
(to the deputies)
Take them away.

The two officers nod and lead Dean and Sam out of the church.

COLLINS
What happened to you, Jared? Ever since-

MERCER
(interrupting)
Don't you dare bring that up!
(beat)
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a job to do.
(walks off)
Can't waste my time here waitin' for God…

Hold on a close up of Collins for beat, regretful.

CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM

Dean is sat in a plain grey interrogation room, while Mercer sits in the chair opposite.

DEAN
Boy, this sure is cozy.

MERCER
(smiles)
You're a funny guy.

DEAN
Sense of humor’s important.
(grins)
Chicks dig that.

MERCER
Yeah? Chicks like...Dani Barlow?

Dean leans back in his chair and frowns.

MERCER
You went to visit her yesterday, you and your accomplice.
(stern)
Why?

DEAN
Me and my partner we're-

JUMP CUT:

SAM
Federal Agents.

MERCER
FBI?

SAM
Yeah, right.

MERCER
(looks at his sheet)
Well according to your partner you claimed to be-

JUMP CUT:

DEAN
Park Rangers.

MERCER
I see...

DEAN
Yeah we were investigating the alleged animal attacks.

MERCER
(doesn't believe a word)
Were you now?

JUMP CUT:

SAM
Yeah, that's all.

MERCER
You want to know what I think?

Sam is silent.

MERCER
I don't think you're Federal Agents or Park Ranger or any crap like that. I think you're a couple of kids who are messed up in the head.

SAM
(coldly)
We didn't kill Doctor Barlow.

MERCER
Well that's too bad because I think you did.

JUMP CUT:

DEAN
Do you have any evidence to back up that claim?

MERCER
Oh don't worry-
(beat)
I'm sure I can cook something up.

Hold on Dean for a beat, he knows that Mercer is determined to pin these murders on someone, anyone.

DEAN
(nods)
Fine.
(beat)
I confess!

MERCER
(surprised)
Excuse me?

DEAN
(angry)
I confess. I killed Dani Barlow!

MERCER
(intrigued)
Why would you do something like that?

DEAN
Because I'm twisted, I'm insane, I'm dangerous. Just fetch me the damn camcorder or whatever and you'll have it on tape…

MERCER
And what about your partner?

DEAN
He's innocent. He doesn't know what I do. He's a bit simple you know.
(points to head)
Up here.

Mercer smiles.

INT. PRISON CELL

Sam is sat in his cell leaning against the bars when CLINK, the cell door is unlocked and opened.

MERCER
You're free to go.

SAM
(confused)
Free?

MERCER
(shakes head)
Man, he wasn't lying'. Boy, you really are slow on the uptake aren't you?

SAM
What about Dean?

MERCER
Oh we're gonna' hold on to him.
(beat)
He confessed.

SAM
(gob smacked)
He...what!?

MERCER
(patronizing tone)
He. Con. Fessed. To. The. Crimes. Is that clear enough for you?

Sam nods. He knows Dean's game plan.

MERCER
(beat)
Now get out, before I charge you with wasting police time.

Sam walks out of the cell and nudges past Mercer.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM

Close up on the table as a letter of confession is thrown into frame. Pan up to Dean's face.

DEAN
(demanding)
I want my phone call.

EXT. POLICE STATION-DUSK

Sam is heading down the stairs and onto the street when his cell phone rings. He answers it.

SAM
What the hell are you doing, Dean?

INT. POLICE STATION, HALLWAY

DEAN
Best I could do. Look, at least this way they only arrest one of us, right?

SAM (O.C.)
(sighs)
Yeah I guess, but now what?

DEAN
Now you head back to the church and check out that graveyard, we still need to know exactly what we're dealing with here

EXT. STREET

SAM
And what about you?

INT. POLICE STATION, HALLWAY

DEAN
(grins)
I'm working on that.

SAM (O.C.)
(smiles)
Just remember not to drop the soap, okay?

DEAN
Smart ass.

EXT. STREET

SAM
I wouldn't say that in prison, Dean, someone might take it as a compliment.

DEAN (O.C.)
(annoyed)
I'm hanging up now.

Sam laughs and puts his phone away.

INT. POLICE STATION, HALLWAY

Dean hangs up and is led back to the interrogation room in cuffs by one of the deputies.

DEAN
(singing “Time is on my side” by the Rolling Stones)
“Tiiime is on my side, yes it is...”

CUT TO:

INT. CHURCH

Father Collins is busy lighting some candles on the alter when he hears knocking at the door.

COLLINS
Just a moment.
(Walks up to the door)
Who is it?

SAM (O.C.)
It's Sam Winchester, from this afternoon.

Collins opens the door.

COLLINS
Sam! I thought the Sheriff had-

SAM
(interrupting)
I'll explain later.
(beat)
But right now, I could really use a tour of that graveyard.
(beat)
Before it gets dark.

Collins nods.

INT. POLICE STATION, MORGUE

We ANGLE DOWN to see Dani Barlow's dead body lay face up on a cold metal slab. Her body is bloodied around the neck where we can see horrific gashings and tears. Her eyes are closed. The examiner, DOCTOR CASEY (male, late-thirties, glasses, bookish) walks in.

CASEY
(into dictation machine)
Okay, subject is female, aged 32, height 163cm, weight 112 lbs. Subject's name is Danielle Barlow, former Doctor and Coroner.

He looks down at the neck injuries.

CASEY
Subject has sustained multiple injuries to the neck and jugular arteries, symptomatic of most animal attacks.

Casey puts down his dictation machine on the tray next to Dani. We FOCUS ON Dani in the background as her eyes open. Casey turns around and walks over to the draw to fetch a scalpel when he turns back-

Dani is stood right behind him, smiling with her pale bluish skin and cold eyes.

Casey gasps in fright.

DANI
I'm so....hungry!

She grabs Casey and lunges her sharpened teeth into his neck. Casey screams in agony.

CLOSE UP on the scalpel as it drops to the floor where we can see Casey's shoes in frame, struggling and squirming like hell as his scream continues.
