Episode Eighteen: Head Hunter

By Booser

Part One

EXT. “THE HIGH HORSE” BAR. NIGHT
Raliegh, Utah

An ESTABLISHING SHOT of the bar and the surrounding roadway. It seems like one of those off the beaten path kinda places. The glowing pink and blue lights and presence of a line of gleaming motorcycles parked outside would indicate this is a bikers and truckers bar, and a pretty rough one at that. The wind kicks up some slight plumes of dust from the roadside as we ZOOM in.

INT. BAR.

Camera PANS across the bar, an assortment of rough types are on display. From grizzled beer swilling truckers to leather clad tattooed bikers.

MUSIC CUE – “She’s My Cherry Pie” – Poison

We focus on one group drinking noisily in the corner. Four bikers TORO, PLISSKEN, TARRY and CONWAY are present here. You wouldn’t want to attract the attention of any of them.

TORO
(disgruntled)
Sons a bitches think they own the road.

PLISSKEN
We
(beat)
Own the road.

TARRY
Yeah!

TORO
Coming down from Salt Lake one of them nearly ran me off the road near Witchata. Take them outta their 20 ton toys and see how though they are…

One of the truckers, BILL overhears this. He turns around.

BILL
Well. Sounds like a challenge to me.

His friend RONNY however is only interested in a quiet drink.

RONNY
Come one Bill. Leave it.

BILL
Nah, come on now. Let’s see if Meat Loaf over here is able to lift that gauntlet he’s after throwing down. Bloody kids couldn’t even stay on the same road as my rig never mind drive one.

TORO
(rising from his seat)
You!
(beat)
I’m gonna kick your frickin’ ass!

Bill slides off his stool.

RONNY
(putting his hand on Bill’s shoulder)
Leave it Bill, it’s more trouble then it’s worth. We just got the backhaul home after three days.
(dismissively)
Let it be.

However his pleas seem to be fallen on deaf ears. Evidently everybody has had a bit too much to drink.

BILL
You watch yourself Ronny.
(beat)
Don’t worry about me.

Toro grabs a pool cue as he walks by the table.

TORO
I think you should have listened to your friend amigo.

BILL
Why is that?

TORO
Cause me and my friends here?
(beat)
We’re gonna make you wish you kept your mouth shut.

BILL
(mocking laugh)
I only wish I swatted you off the road back in Salt Lake when I had the chance.

Enraged Toro lashes out with the cue. Bill in anticipation ducks out of the way causing Toro to only hit empty beer bottles, which explode in a shower of emerald glass. Ronny jumps off his stool but is grabbed in the throat by Toro, much to the delight of his friends who cheer his every move. Two more trucker types jump off their stools to come to Bill’s aid. Toro drops Ronny and spins around to face his new attackers. He winds one in the gut before sending the other guy sprawling across the floor with a well-aimed blow from the cue.

TORO
(with a wry smile)
Demasiado fácil.

Toro continues to beat the group of truckers senseless. In the ensuing melee Bill crawls away and staggers out the door.

EXT. BAR

We see the door swing open and a bloodied Bill stagger towards his truck.

INT. BAR

Plissken whistles at Toro and motions towards the door. Toro follows his gaze. Bill is trying to get away? He’ll see about that. Like a lion toying with his prey Toro throws an opponent against the wall. CLOSE UP of the trucker hitting the wall and slowly slumping onto the ground.

EXT. BAR

Toro bursts through the door in hot pursuit of Bill. We hear the rumble of a truck engine (O.S). A smile creeps across Toro’s face.

TORO
Drinking and driving is dangerous amigo….

He hops on his motorbike and guns the throttle. VROOM! VROOM!

TORO
…You never know who could end up dead.

With a yell he pulls out onto the road. The chase is on.

INT. TRUCK. CABIN

Bill wipes some blood of his face and nervously peers into his mirrors. POV MIRROR a lonely white streak speeds towards the truck.

EXT. ROAD

POV TORO the experienced biker has wasted no time in catching up with the truck. We see the road pass by in a blur. VROOM! Faster and faster! Toro’s eyes narrow as he is catching up.

INT. TRUCK, CABIN

Bill sees the single light from Toro’s motorcycle in his rearview. Getting closer. Suddenly a blur and a loud shriek and the light is no more.

BILL
Jesus Christ!

He slams on the brakes.

EXT. ROAD.

We see the large rig brake hard, almost tail spinning on the empty road. CLOSE UP of the door as it swings open and Bill gingerly hops down from the cabin. He swallows hard. The air is deathly still.

BILL
Hey, Hello?
(beat)
Buddy, look man this is stupid
(beat)
I….

No answer, but the wind whistling through the trees.

BILL
Hey!
(walking towards the back of the truck)
You ok? You hurt?

BILL
(under his breath)
Damn jackass.

Bill continues walking back along the road until he sees an unearthly sight, which shocks him to the core.

CLOSE UP of Toro’s head locked between two black studded gloves, a horrific expression on his face, a mixture of fear and unimaginable pain. We see Bill in the background. Terrified. A sickening sound of Toro’s body falling away from his head as a CLOSE UP of Toro’s headless body hits the ground.

AERIAL SHOT of the truck in the middle of the deserted road as we hear a man’s screams.

SUPERNATURAL – “Head Hunter”

EXT. ROADSIDE. NIGHT

The Impala is parked off the side of the road, almost nestled in the bushes. The bonnet is popped open and a man is bent over the grill straining to see into the guts of the car. He pulls back and wipes his brow with a greasy hand. In the illumination of the flashlight we see its DEAN WINCHESTER.

DEAN
(jokingly)
I love you sweetheart, but if you keep this up you’re scrap.

He is joined by Sam who walks around to have a look.

SAM
Any luck?

DEAN
Nada, I think it’s the radiator. There’s a leak somewhere but I patched it up as best I can in this light. I’ll have to take another look at it tomorrow cos at the minute it’s just keeping my finger in the damn.

SAM
She hasn’t been running smoothly since the accident.

DEAN
What do you expect Sam, she’s been through a lot.

SAM
You ever think –

DEAN
Don’t Sam, don’t you dare. I’d trade you in before I’d even think about that.

SAM
Ok, just sayin’

DEAN
Well don’t say. She’s just fine, a little elbow grease and she’ll be as good as new
(beat)
Which is more then I can say for your hair.

SAM
(walking away)
Well you two have fun.

A wail of sirens split the air and the boys find themselves dappled in spinning red, white and blue light. We TRACK an ambulance and police car as they speed past. Another police car pulls over just behind the Impala.

CLOSE UP of the driver’s door creaking open and a pair of boots hitting the ground. A young POLICE OFFICER walks across to the Winchesters.

POLICE OFFICER
You boys havin’ some trouble?

DEAN
No, thanks. We’re just fine.

The officer looks at Sam quizzically.

SAM
Really

POLICE OFFICER
(looking curiously towards the trunk)
Sure you don’t need any help?

DEAN
(smiling sarcastically)
We’re almost done

SAM
(changing the subject)
Hey so
(motioning down the road)
What’s going on?

POLICE OFFICER
Road accident, pretty nasty one at that.

SAM
Anyone hurt?

POLICE OFFICER
One fatality it looks like. Look if you boys don’t need any help I’ll just be catching up. I can radio this in for you if you like.

SAM
Oh, no
(beat)
Thank you.

DEAN
Deal with this stuff all the time.

POLICE OFFICER
(turning to leave)
A forty-year-old car? I can believe that.

Dean and Sam watch the police car pull out onto the road.

DEAN
(muttering)
We’ll see how good he looks in forty years.

Suddenly the engine splutters into life and begins to purr over. Dean shoots Sam a triumphant smile as he slams down the lid.

DEAN
Hey would you look at that!
(rubbing the bonnet affectionately)
Just needed a little TLC that’s all.

Sam smiles as they jump back into the Chevy.

INT. IMPALA. LATER

Dean and Sam look out from inside the Impala. The road up ahead is almost blocked off by police and ambulances. A large truck is fishtailed.

SAM
This must be the accident.

The impala drives slowly towards the scene. A police officer motions to the Winchesters to stop. He approaches the driver’s window. Dean and Sam recognize him as the same officer who stopped on the road.

DEAN
Great, it’s Officer Barbrady.

A tap at the window and Dean winds it down.

DEAN
What’s up officer, can we get through?

OFFICER
Yeah in just a minute. We’re clearing the place up, we’re gonna have to ask you to sit tight for just a second.

Dean nods.

OFFICER
You got your car working I see.

DEAN
Told ya, it’s nothing I can’t handle.
(motions up ahead)
Looks bad.

OFFICER
Yeah, seemingly some poor guy slid his bike under a truck. Struck his head clean off. That’s not what the truck driver says though.

SAM
Jeez…

DEAN
What kind of bike?

OFFICER
Harley as far as I can make out, an FXSTS I think.

DEAN
Oh man, a softail?

OFFICER
Yeah, I’ve never seen so many classics in one night.

Sam looks on incredulously at this conversation.

SAM
What did you mean “that’s not what the truck driver says”?

OFFICER
What he says doesn’t make any damn sense.

The officer taps the roof of the Impala and motions them through.

OFFICER
Right. There you go. Stay safe.

DEAN
Will do, thanks.

SAM
Well that was surreal.

DEAN
What do you mean?

SAM
You two seemed more interested in the bike then what actually happened to that guy.

DEAN
I was just surprised that’s all. I used to have a major boy toy crush on Harleys. You know Dennis Hopper? Easy Rider?

Sam isn’t impressed.

DEAN
Born to be Wild? It’s classic Americana.

Sam yawns.

SAM
So are motels.

INT. MOTEL BATHROOM. MORNING

Sam is washing his hands and face in the bathroom sink. He notices grease on his fingers and splashes of it around the sink’s rim.

SAM
Dammit Dean.

He wipes the grease off with a small towel.

INT. BEDROOM

Sam throws the greasy towel at Dean’s head. The elder Winchester wakes with a start.

DEAN
(groggily)
Dude.

Sam smiles.

SAM
Morning sunshine.

DEAN
So it is.
(looks around)
Where’s my coffee?

SAM
Machine’s broke.

Dean rolls over to go back to sleep.

DEAN
Great. Wake me when it’s fixed.

At the table Sam flicks open a local paper.

SAM
Hey look. Our road accident last night made front-page news.

DEAN
Small town Sammy.

SAM
(reading)
Bar fight…no witnesses…. victim found…
(beat)
Dean?
(beat)
Hey Dean!

Sam walks over and shakes Dean violently.

DEAN
(sleepily)
Dude.
(beat)
Where’s my coffee?

SAM
Shut up, get dressed!

DEAN
Sure thing.
(mockingly)
……..Dad

EXT. HOME OF BILLY PARR. DAY

Dean and Sam dressed in suits, are standing on a doorstep. Dean is still fidgeting awkwardly with his clothes.

SAM
Straighten your tie. You look like a hobo.

DEAN
Even hobos get coffee. I swear man this guy sounds like a right
(door opens)
… wacko.
(embarrassed)
Uh…hi?

Sam jumps in quickly.

SAM
Mr. Parr? We’re with Utah State accident investigation?

BILLY
(squinting)
Uh huh.

DEAN
We heard you had a bit of a fright last night.

BILLY
I’ll say. I’ve just been questioned non-stop by the police and the insurance –

SAM
We’ll try to keep it brief, actually we just wanted to clarify some things you said in your statement.

BILLY
Sure, I guess that’s ok.

INT. KITCHEN

The Winchesters and Billy Parr are seated around the circular wooden table, cups of coffee in their hands.

DEAN
So this guy just went crazy?

BILLY
Just like that.

SAM
Well did you say something to him? Or do anything?

BILLY
Nope, nothin’

DEAN
And then he followed you outside?

BILLY
Yeah, that’s when I got in my truck. I mean the guy was nuts, he destroyed half the bar. I wasn’t gonna try and reason with him.

SAM
(reading from official looking notes)
You drove off towards Tarr Tree Bridge –

BILLY
Just as I got to the bridge I noticed he had gone. The light vanished like he’d fallen or crashed or something. So I got out of my cab to see if he was ok. I didn’t want things to get any worse you see.

DEAN
(nods)
The police say he slid under your truck.

BILLY
Oh no way, nadda. I got out and that’s when I saw him tusslin’ with someone.

DEAN
Who? Can you describe him?

BILLY
It was dark. I couldn’t see. But that sonofabitch ripped his head clean off his shoulders.

SAM
(gulps)
Right off?

BILLY
(nods)
I didn’t stick around after that. I ran back to my cabin and radioed the police. I locked the doors too, I’ll be damned if I was goin’ back out there.

DEAN
You did the right thing sir.

SAM
So you didn’t get a good look at this guy. No distinguishing features? Any idea how or why he was following you?

BILLY
Look kid I’ve no idea. I’ve told a million people a million different times. It doesn’t change.
(beat)
There was something else though. Something I heard while I was waiting in the truck.

SAM
What was that?

BILLY
Hooves.
(beat)
The sound of hooves.
