INT. DONAVON HOME- KITCHEN- SNOWING
(ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE BY BRENDA LEE)

We open to LAURA DONAVON, 35 years old, busy cleaning dishes. WHSSH… we see a strange fog creep past the screen. Laura turns around. Nothing.

LITTLE BOY (O.S.)
What you doing?

Laura jumps, startled. She looks down towards MATT, 7 years old.

LAURA
Just cleaning up.

Laura goes back to washing the dishes.

MATT
I want to go to the park.

LAURA
No, maybe later.

Matt frowns and stomps his foot.

MATT
I want to go to the park now!

LAURA
Later. I promise.

Matt frowns. Eyes narrow. CLOSE UP on a plate beginning to slightly levitate.

MATT
You never do anything I want to do!

Laura screams, frustrated.

LAURA
I’m busy!!!

Matt breathes out.

MATT
You shouldn’t have done that.

Laura looks down towards Matt, frightened. The windows open and slam shut. The drawers of the cupboard slide in and out. Dishes levitate around the room. Laura looks around, frightened.

MATT
You made her angry.

Laura RUNS off. Screaming for her life. A drawer opens and a knife levitates out.

MATT
No!!!

Matt stares towards the knife, scared.

MATT
No! Don’t do it!

Laura reaches the front door. Locked.

MATT
No!!!

Laura turns around and notices the floating knife. The knife hurtles through the air… STRIKE! The knife RAMS into Laura’s forehead. CLOSE UP on Matt watching, tears flow down his face, terrified. CRASH! The dishes collapse to the floor.

SUPERNATURAL: IMAGINARY

INT. DINER- NIGHT
Cheboygan, Michigan…

CLOSE UP on a newspaper. LOCAL WOMAN COMMITS SUICIDE. Pan out, Sam stares down towards the article. Something wasn’t right. Dean glances over towards him.

DEAN
Sam…

No response.

DEAN
Sam…

Sam looks up

SAM
Hmm… huh?

DEAN
Find something?

SAM
Yeah, I think so.

Sam hands Dean the newspaper

SAM
Her name is Laura Donavon. 35 years old.

DEAN
This says she committed suicide. Where’s the catch?

SAM
No signs of depression. Nothing. She just ups and kills herself out of the blue.

DEAN
Yeah, so? Stuff like this happens all the time.

Sam shakes his head no

SAM
People just don’t kill themselves. There’s always something that leads up to it. Depression. Signs. Symptoms. Something… anything.

DEAN
Your point?

SAM
I think something killed her.

Dean raises his eyebrow

DEAN
What gives you that idea?

SAM
Well for starters, if a ghost did do this. There would be no ordinary signs for the police to detect…

DEAN
And?

Sam points towards the bottom paragraph of the article.

DEAN
All the cupboards were open, broken dishes lined the floor, and all of the windows were cracked.

SAM
Exactly. I say it’s at least worth checking out. We’ve looked into less.

DEAN
Alright, fine. But if she turns out to be just another pill popper who just forgot her medication because she was too smashed up on eggnog. You’re buying.

Sam laughs and shakes his head no. Dean nods. Dean hands the waitress a twenty.

WAITRESS
Merry Christmas.

Dean shakes his head no.

DEAN
Come on…

Dean and Sam exit the diner.

EXT. DINER

Snow falls from the sky. Dean frowns.

SAM
What is it?

Dean looks over towards Sam

DEAN
Nothing. I just want to get out of here.

INT. ST. MARY’S ORPHANAGE- BOY’S ROOM

Young and teenage guys clutter around the window looking out. Matt is amongst them. SYLVIA BROWN, African American, mid 40s, enters the room. The children turn their attention immediately towards her.

SYLVIA
Matt, there are a couple of men here who need to ask you some questions.

Matt nods, skeptical. He leaves the room.

FADE TO:
INT. ST. MARY’S ORPHANAGE- VISITOR CENTER

Dean looks out the window, wearing a suit and tie. The door opens and Matt enters the room. Sylvia looks towards Sam, sitting at a circular table.

SYLVIA
Here he is.

Matt slowly enters the room. Dean nods.

SAM
Hey, Matt. I’m Sam. This is my brother Dean.

MATT
Are you cops?

Dean laughs and nods

SAM
We just want to ask you a couple of questions. Is that alright with you?

SYLVIA
I’ll be right outside if you need me.

Sylvia leaves the room. Matt looks towards Dean.

MATT
I know why you’re here.

DEAN
Oh?

MATT
I didn’t do it.

Dean looks towards Sam.

SAM
Do you know who did?

Matt nods

SAM
Who?

MATT
My friend.

Dean walks over towards Matt and kneels down next to his level.

DEAN
Your friend?

Matt nods

DEAN
This friend have a name?

Matt shakes his head no.

DEAN
Man or a woman?

MATT
Woman.

SAM
What does she look like?

MATT
Long black hair, blue eyes… tall.

Dean laughs and nods

SAM
How long have you known her?

MATT
I don’t know.

DEAN
I don’t know as in you don’t want to tell us. Or I don’t know as in “it’s been so long I forgot”?

Matt nods.

MATT
Can I go now?

DEAN
Yeah, you can go. Wait… one more question- is she in this room right now?

Matt nods and leaves the room. Sam looks towards Dean.

SAM
So, what do you think?

DEAN
Children have been known to be more open to the spirit world. They haven’t become “brainwashed” into believing that there is no such thing as ghosts. In other words, they’re innocent.

SAM
Did you hear how he referred to her?

DEAN
Yeah, as a friend. Since the beginning of time practically, children have been reported as having imaginary friends- a psychological barrier from others or possible feelings of abandonment. Whatever this thing is, it’s close to him. Follows him everywhere.

Sylvia enters the room.

SYLVIA
Hi, so how did it go?

SAM
It went great. Just have another question for you though…

Sylvia nods

SAM
He mentioned a woman. Long black hair. Blue eyes.

Sylvia nods

SYLVIA
Her

DEAN
You know who he’s talking about?

SYLVIA
Well, not exactly. Follow me.

FADE TO:
INT. ST. MARY’S ORPHANAGE- CLASS ROOM

CLOSE UP on a child’s drawing of a tall woman with black hair and blue eyes. Pan out.

SAM
So, this is her.

DEAN
Who is she?

SYLVIA
I’ve tried to ask him many times. He doesn’t know. He just sees her.

Dean nods

DEAN
Any others?

Dean holds the picture.

DEAN
Like this?

Sylvia nods

SYLVIA
Many.

SAM
How well does he get along with the other kids?

SYLVIA
They’re afraid of him.

Dean looks towards Sam. Both caught off guard.

DEAN
Afraid?

SYLVIA
Yes. You see there was this fight a couple of months ago. Between Matt and another boy. Matt said “I wish you were dead.” That night the boy died of strangulation. Too many blankets I suppose. But, you know how boys are. They all believed Matt had something to do with it.

DEAN
Of course.

SAM
So, does Matt have any imaginary friends?

SYLVIA
Yeah… her.

Dean nods

DEAN
He talk to her often?

SYLVIA
On and off.

DEAN
So, what’s going to happen to him?

SYLVIA
He’s going to come back here until we are able to find another foster family to care for him.

DEAN
Another foster family?

Sylvia nods

SYLVIA
He’s been in and out of foster care for years.

Dean looks out the window. Children playing on the playground. Matt sits on the teeter-totter, alone.

SAM
Any reason why?

Sylvia shakes her head no.

SYLVIA
No reason in particular.

Dean nods

DEAN
Thank you for your time.

Dean looks towards Sam

DEAN
Come on, let’s go.

INT. ST. MARY’S ORPHANAGE- HALLWAYS

Sam and Dean walk down the halls. Sam looks towards Dean.

SAM
Most parents just don’t adopt a child and then abandon him. Something has to have happened.

DEAN
Exactly. And I intend to find out. This ghost, this thing that follows him. It’s more than just a friend.

SAM
What do you mean?

DEAN
I’d say more like a guardian angel. A protector in the twisted and benign sense.
(beat)
That kid upset him…

SAM
Thus the spirit got upset

DEAN
Exactly.

EXT. ST. MARY’S ORPHANAGE- PLAYGROUND

CLOSE UP on Matt sitting on the teeter-totter, being raised and lowered. He stares out towards the other kids. Pan out to reveal that no one else is on the teeter-totter. It was moving on it’s own. Matt looks over into the parking lot to see Sam and Dean leaving. We follow them.

SAM
We have to find out what’s behind this. Before anyone else gets hurt.

Dean nods. They get into the Impala and drive off. Pan over to see Matt staring towards the screen, watching them leave.
